Learn to draw without guessing

Teaching students how to think through a project from beginning to end is just as critical as the physical aspect of drawing. Having the courage to draw what you truly see, and not how you think things should look is the first concept we address when learning how to draw.

Studies and long term projects

Along with learning how to sketch from line drawings, photos, and real life subjects we also use our lessons to produce short term studies.  This allows us to use many different surfaces and mediums to see what materials and techniques students are drawn to as they also work on more complex fully rendered pieces. These larger pieces are framed as finished works of art.

School year, summer, and online learning

Students come for a weekly one hour class or bi-weekly 2 hour class with 2-4 people.  Lessons are held in my studio in Collinsville, Connecticut. The year is broken into two sessions: a school-year session and a summer session. Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic some lessons are available online.

“Ms. Sawtelle has been my daughter’s Art teacher for approximately eight years. During that time she has consistently demonstrated the qualities of a quality, caring teacher.  Ms. Sawtelle balances accomplishing lesson goals with fostering creativity. She has successfully taught many students of different ages, abilities and learning styles. Ms. Sawtelle has supported my daughter’s learning through different developmental stages, levels of maturity and varying interests.  At every point in that process, Ms. Sawtelle has encouraged and challenged my daughter and classmates to excel, enjoy learning and grow as students.  Her effectiveness as a teacher is evidenced in her students’ interest in in the next lesson and future projects.  As a parent of one of her students, I am thankful that my daughter has received excellent instruction from a genuine, reliable educator who truly cares about her."
